Proper E.T.A. is not the presence of rigid, step-by-step instructions for every task you assign, dictating each of your moves necessary to reach completion. It is the process of getting clarity on the destination (expected result), understanding when you must arrive (due date), and determining how to navigate the middle of the journey (training).
Yes, training is part of proper E.T.A., but we must understand that training is not an impromptu exercise conducted when we are in the midst of action. It’s a preparatory measure, a resource to utilize before entering the arena. Your V.P. and fellow seniors will initiate knowledge duplication and mentorship as needed, but they won’t run with you at court during game time. The ball is yours to control. The score is yours to make. EXECUTION is on you. Whether you score that shot or not is on you, never on other people or other things.
So let’s never be that player that needs to be micromanaged, team. Or a leader that enables micromanagement. Instead, let’s aim to anticipate the plays and orchestrate them. A 10X Cleaner who clarifies the right expectations at the start, not towards the end when the due date is near or is already off track, and one who takes full ownership of what they say yes to. An A-Player who leverages our E.T.A. culture the right way.
