There is nothing uglier than an old infant. Mature only in years but never fully grown in character, skills, or experience.
As Sir Jordan Peterson perfectly points out in the media below, it’s acceptable to be clueless when you’re young or a beginner. However, if you’re still the same person sometime later, that’s no longer tolerable.
Are you an adult infant?
Please don’t be and don’t ever tolerate one.
Working with individuals who need constant hand-holding is not the preference. The team is not a place for spoon-feeding or endless forgiveness without results. It’s a collective of responsible adults in a professional partnership, managing a business that delivers top-quality work.
There’s a culture of setting expectations and providing resources for growth, such as training and development opportunities. However, these resources are not excuses for underachievement.
Each of us was chosen to be here because we promised we have the attitude and skills required to fulfill the job. We must honor that word by consistently striving for personal and professional growth, independently and proactively. We must learn to walk and run on our own, and be real self-regulating and self-leading adults who can find our way to victory even without other people around.
So Senior up. Act like a real professional, somebody who does not need to be told how to do their job. Be a valuable team member your teammates don’t ever want to lose.
Skill up. Don’t become reliant on someone else and receive credit for work you did not even do. Learn the skill yourself and take pride in owning the entirety of your outputs.
Speak up. Don’t turn a blind eye to inefficiencies. Lean in and brainstorm with your team to better the environment you’re in. You make up the whole system too.
Be a problem solver. Find ways and only escalate challenges with proposed solutions. You are a creative mind blessed with skills and ideas to share with the world. You’re not born to be a mere cog worker. Don’t simply wait to be fed. Bring out the real ARTist in you and learn how to feed yourself.
More importantly, Kaizen. Never repeat the same mistakes.
Let us all do better and take our work game 10X levels higher. Where else are we supposed to go but up? We have everything we need to be as great and successful as simply being dedicated professionals and consistently delivering outstanding results.
